HISTORY – OUR STORY

In 1950, David V. Karney, the founder of Karney Properties, relocated to Los Angeles from the East Coast, where he had earned an M.B.A. degree from Boston University. He began seeking investment opportunities in the region’s growing real estate market.

In 1952, he founded Karney Properties. With the backing of several private investors, he acquired and began operating apartment buildings in Hollywood. Several years later, he sold those properties and shifted his focus to developing office, commercial and retail properties.

In 1964, Karney developed the Company’s first industrial property in the San Gabriel Valley city of Monterey Park. From 1964 to 2013, Karney Properties focused on industrial and creative office properties in Southern California.

In 1975, Karney Properties’ portfolio more than doubled with the acquisition of Mutual Benefit Insurance Company’s Southern California industrial real estate holdings, most of which were concentrated in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

EXPANSION & REPOSITIONING

In 2003, David Karney transferred management of the Company to his daughter, Aliza Karney Guren, who was named Chief Executive Officer.

Beginning in 2013, Karney Properties began diversifying its development strategy to include trans-generational growth opportunities in projects for office, creative office and commercial buildings. A key component was the acquisition of six significant sites in the Culver City transit-oriented district bounded by the new Metro Expo Line station and the historic Helms Bakery complex.

In addition, Karney has purchased strategic assets in Playa Vista, Hawthorne and Temecula, and has continued to redevelop and enhance existing properties.

Karney Properties continues to selectively and strategically expand its portfolio and geographic footprint.
