In 1950, David V. Karney, the founder of Karney Properties, relocated from the East Coast, where he earned an M.B.A. degree from Boston University, to Los Angeles to begin seeking investment opportunities in the region’s growing real estate market.

In 1952, he founded Karney Properties. With the backing of several private investors, he acquired and began operating apartment buildings in Hollywood. Several years later, he sold those properties and shifted his focus to developing office, commercial and retail properties in Southern California.

In 1964, Karney developed the company’s first industrial property in the San Gabriel Valley city of Monterey Park. From 1964 to 2013, Karney Properties focused on industrial and creative office properties in Southern California.

In 1975, Karney Properties’ portfolio more than doubled with the acquisition of Mutual Benefit Insurance Company’s Southern California industrial real estate holdings, most of which were concentrated in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

In 2003, Karney transferred management of his company to his daughters, Aliza Karney Guren, who was named Chief Executive Officer, and Susanna Karney Flaster who became President.

2013-2015 Karney Properties began diversifying its development strategy to include trans-generational growth opportunities in mixed-use projects for creative, retail, commercial, residential and other tenants in high-demand markets commencing with the acquisition of six significant sites in the Culver City transit-oriented district bounded by the new Metro Expo Line station and the historic Helms Bakery complex.

In 2015, a new company, Volo Development Company, was launched to execute this new development strategy.
